Blackheads are one of the most common forms of acne. Although people who have oily skin are more vulnerable to blackheads, anyone can get them. They form when pores become clogged with a combination of dead skin cells and excess oil (sebum) from your sebaceous glands.
“The good news is that there is a cornucopia of over-the-counter products that contain effective ingredients to exfoliate, soften, and even remove blackheads,” says Allison Britt Kimmins, MD, MPH.
1. Cleansing
• Use a gentle cleanser: Opt for a salicylic acid-based cleanser to help unclog pores and reduce oil buildup.
• Avoid harsh scrubbing: Scrubbing can irritate the skin and worsen blackheads.
2. Exfoliation
• Chemical exfoliants: Use products with AHAs (like glycolic acid) or BHAs (like salicylic acid) to exfoliate dead skin cells and clear pores.
• Physical exfoliation: Use sparingly to avoid irritation.
3. Pore Treatments
• Clay masks: Absorb excess oil and draw out impurities.
• Charcoal masks: Detoxify the skin and target clogged pores.
• Pore strips: Provide temporary removal of blackheads but may not address the root cause.
4. Moisturize
• Choose a non-comedogenic moisturizer to maintain hydration without clogging pores.
5. Targeted Treatments
• Retinoids: Over-the-counter or prescription retinoids promote cell turnover and prevent clogged pores.
• Niacinamide: Reduces oil production and soothes irritation.
6. Professional Treatments
• Facial extractions: Performed by a dermatologist or esthetician to safely remove blackheads.
• Chemical peels: Help exfoliate and renew the skin.
• Microdermabrasion: Gently removes the outer layer of skin to clear pores.
7. Preventive Tips
• Avoid heavy makeup or use non-comedogenic products.
• Always remove makeup before bed.
• Maintain a consistent skincare routine.
